The Symphonic Sound of Silence

Toxo, "Flores No.1" de la serie "Objetos dispersos" de Xulio Formoso

Child’s pose

Mantra

Breathe
The hiss (of wind in the eaves)
                   The lull (when it stops)

Breathe
The scrape (of squirrel’s claw on roof)
And scratch (still looking for nuts on the roof)
The clink (water dripping into a cup)

In
                   The hum (of ancient refrigerator)
The whir (it stops, is this a good thing)
Out
                   The murmur (voices next door)
                   The ting (cell phone alerts)
Breathe
The rustle (wind in the leaves)

The silence is thick with sound.

  1. Now I'm feelin' all zen!

Who knew you could meditate and blog-hop at the same time.

    Thanks for this.

Hope your fridge keeps on humming for a lot longer yet, and keeps that whir at bay, if the whir is not a good thing. :)

  8. Oh I like this- my favourite of yours so far- I've always tried to think about how to write 'silence'- you nailed it by colouring in it's edges with all these little and subtle movements of the world- great form

  10. That's what always happens to me when I try to count my breaths...way too much going on in the silence, and I always seem to have my own squirrels making noise, too. This is serene and delightful in all ways.

  13. I remember when I first started meditating. I thought one could close out everything - sink into a waking sleep as it were. I'll never forget when it dawned on me that meditation meant allowing one's senses to become "supersensory". The noises were all magnified and exhilarating. You capture that perfectly here.

  15. thoughts while meditating. I used to keep a notepad near by so I could write something down if I needed to get it out of my head. That just became another distraction! Great write. I could feel it!

  16. A breathe of fresh air, one can feel as they read through. Sometimes just taking in the moment can be the hardest thing to do.

  20. Really cool Audrey. I love how you incorporated so much in here, yet in such subtle fashion. The breathing exercise is such a good set up for the last line, completely love it. And the articles for each stop along the breathing exercise are so neat in the way you put them in perspective here. Again, that last line is great, and so, so true. Thanks

  21. That's how I feel sometimes when I'm trying to meditate or just sit in silence for a bit. I hear the birds and the garbage men and the wind... I'm not a very good meditator! :-)
    This is great my friend!

  24. Nice - yogic poetry! I like the juxtaposition of the breathing in/out and what's going on in the mind. Great contrast.

  25. Really enjoy how you time this with the breath and the meditational silence that comes with awareness of so much that too often disregard or take for granted.

  27. Nicely done it took my breath away, however I quickly breathed it back in. I love to mediate using soft nature tunes, candles and quiet. I loved your form and placement, excellent. bravo.
