The Flavor of the Day

Haunts of Solitude

banking on tomorrow’s promises
littered in the hard currency of the lost
she holds out a cup
of today’s flavor of the day

a down payment
on tomorrow’s dreams

and with interest accruing
she points out
that the flavor of the day
isn’t really so bad

a bit of burn
for the road

a heater in a gut
chilled

a bit of the hair of the dog
to ease into the day

  3. When we have to put a downpayment on those dreams, we really have to take what is given to us, day by day ~

  5. hey whatever it takes to get through the day eh? good thing the flavor changes daily...some better than others...and at least she holds the cup out and knows it paves the way til tomorrow...smiles.

  6. We all put a downpayment on dreams, I think.....hoping they come true, hoping we can (in the end) pay the price. And yes, easing into the day is the way.....

  9. Some days' flavours are more palatable than others - but we don't get to choose; we can only take what is served, one day at a time.

  18. We do have to have hope..... This is a thought provoking, soul entrenching poem. It makes me think that even the most simple things in life can get us up in the morning. That cup of Jo.... The thought of a new day, New flavor, live life and feel it all

    Love this...

  25. So forlorn! But can you blame the narrator? I am not sure if she offers something in her cup or collects something, if it is her who moves on or the passers-by who ease their guilt, but I hope I am not her. The hair of the dog may not be alcohol, but no one is promising anyone anything in this magnificent enigma of a poem!

  26. There are millions who would understand this poem quite well. There are millions more who should read it and find some compassion. Beautiful work, Audrey.

  27. This reminds me of the journey I decided to take: quit my job to stake out on my own - it's been a hard, but good journey and I'm loving it. :) Lovely poem.

  28. Oh my word, I LOVE that image. That looks like Chucky the slasher behind him. :)

I like your word play with "flavor of the day." Maybe it's coffee. Maybe it's alcohol. Maybe it's a woman. "Flavor of the month" is usually used when describing a man who goes through a lot of women. This poem speaks of taking in anything you can to simply help you endure and make it through tough circumstances.

For me, it's definitely coffee. And a lot more than one cup. :)

  30. Wonderful wordplay and imagery. I wonder if she is settling for status quo or making the best of cards dealt.
