Sasha

Sasha

some losses are boats

built of unknown timber
they float between piers
unmoored

i wrestle with their gunnels
feel the nature
of the woods used
for hull and rail
which separate me from
water's long, hard swallow

i trace whorls
sanded and varnished
smoothed by long fingers

i hug myself hard
on salty air
hold fast
and remember to breathe

We had to say good bye to my darling girl two weeks ago.  I am a bit adrift.

  1. There are no words I can say for such an immense loss....it does feel like we drift as we grieve....beautifully penned and hugs to you.

  4. Really, Audrey, there are few losses as difficult as the loss of a beloved pet. I have been through this twice already, and of my present three dogs the oldest is now approaching 12...during these times we have to hug ourselves hard and remember to breathe indeed. My condolences to you on the loss of your sweet girl.

  7. I remember that enormous gap that opened up in my life when my last dog died. I found it difficult to converse and and interact with others as the wound was so deep. You poem so clearly illustrates that feeling.

  8. As long as we remember to breathe... again... and again...

  9. Audrey, there is such an adrift feeling when your dog dies. Ted Kooser recently lost his beloved dog, and has a very similar poem that he published in American Life in Poetry. It evokes the same unsettled feeling that your poem does. http://www.americanlifeinpoetry.org/columns/detail/642

  17. That is the biggest sorrow that can be. Remember that Sasha is now chasing butterflies up in heaven's meadow and will every be nearby remembering the love you shared with her. Hugs and love.
