Gone to Europe

Well here I am explaining my absence.

Going to Europe for three weeks
then off teaching for another three weeks

I will be back in blog land mid August--

So enjoy your summer

As I am hoping to enjoy mine!

The Disposition of a Crone

I have a penchant for stately, graceful words,

for the artful turn of phrase,

and I love the sheer beauty of imagery well used.

A phrase can wash over me,

words can stick

and salve,

and when I am done

I can wrap myself

and cozy up against a stanza or two of beauty.

But there is another part

of my poetic brain,

largely untapped,

for it rarely sits still long enough

for me to access it. A more anxious,

more brittle part.

I want to unwrap it

before the wrapping wedges too tightly,

hear the crinkle of it as it is removed,

and breathe-----

and take off the clothes that bind me-----

and yell fuck to the wind-----

and howl at the moon----

for I am a crone

and sometimes,

crones just aren’t nice.

Hard Nut Exposed

A cubicle of steel

containing thousands of

hardened nuts of thought

shake it

and they fend for themselves

in the battle

shake

crack

peel away

vulnerable

all the meat exposed

no matter the consequence

all of us

end there

a hard nut

exposing tender meat

to the environment

of those who would pick

shake

crack

peel away

vulnerable meat exposed
