The Unseen Stories We Tell

wikimedia commons
RayNata, 2008

We sit
Each of us
Stories untold
Lodged in the extraneous items
We deem important enough
To carry with us
--a computer
--a book
--knitting
--the newspaper, splayed
Its pages having already absorbed
Those stories deemed important enough to tell, by someone

And like cattle
We lo and eye each other
Carefully and quickly
Sweeping past
Before contact
So that
Our stories
Leaking out of our eyes
Will remain unnoticed

The Cloak

wikimedia commons
fleur tricot
Lizabayente

I sit cloaked in its scratchy wool
Reminding me of its presence
Every time I shift

A scree of failings
Tattered
Fill its edge like tricot
Tiny knots
Woven in patterns
Of perfect proportion
A sea of memories
Dyed a foam green
To match

I have taken this cloak and folded it
Into a pillow,
Nestled my head in its comfort
And dreamed the dreams of successes

Birthed in desire
And in each one
I find the cloak
On my lap
As I tie the knots
I have come to know so intimately
Blinded by time
I see only a tapestry of foam
In the sunlight

Dance of Dreams

wikimedia commons
Spectators
Glen Josselsohn

I danced
Skipping through
Slippers of dreams
Filet of scene
Seasoned
Slipping
Only occasionally
      into consciousness of a sort
Before some other
Filet stole awareness
     and condensed it
For a while

I line them up.
Pendants hung
With care,
Dreamscapes
Awash.

A Fish's Tale

wikimedia commons
Mitch Featherston

a skewered bit of fish
spoke to me
of its long adventure
in silent reverie
watching the light
careen through bubbles
long left
by plankton’s organizational crimes
as it filtered down
(in otherness)

it danced upon
the upward draft
of these air bubbles
feeling their circumference
bursting upon gill and scale
a rhythmic tambourine
tumbling broadside

and as it ventured its tale
of sun’s dance
i felt my heart
squeeze a bit
a nuanced caress
life against life
as its story now became mine.
