hope is a river in the dark
heard but not seen,

moving on its own
binding skin to muscle.

one foot, then another
shedding sadness, like
too many clothes in summer’s heat

dripping off the depth of cuts
left by those who inflict booming cruelty.

the trickle an echo swallowed
beneath thought’s closed book.

  1. I like the description of hope offered in the first couplet, especially in uncertain times--when too many see hope as some kind of mythological creature. I like thinking that hope never leaves us, particularly when we fail to see it.
