Singing Between the Beats

In indolence
   of time’s
      dance
upon the face
   of my clock,

its movement
   precise.
Its breath extended,

   to hold open
the moment
   Between
       Beats,

when the air vibrates
  without
      the push of purpose
and where the music

   fills its potential
      without the tension of precision

(a slowing
   through opening)

(my body,
   the instrument;
sound and air,
   its vehicles).

I wrote this in an attempt to describe the feeling of both purpose and letting go as I sing in between the beats--between the notes---singing is what I do most of the time--It is a career and a passion--and yet I struggle to find words to describe it

  1. Beautiful metaphor, Audrey!

Comparing the beats of music to our journey in life! Awesome!

  2. where the music

    fills its potential
without the tension of precision...ha i love that...a little wild music you know...and what you follow that with, ourselves, making our own music...very cool...and nice embedded name too...smiles.

  3. So much happens between the beats of our selves and two of us.

  5. Audrey, this is such a brilliant merging of timing and music and, of course, the two are intricately wed. And then you bring in your body, the instrument. The cubist deconstruction of the image is so perfect. We had a Picasso at our museum where I was a docent that was a lot like this. Nicely done.

  6. Wow, I did not realize you were a singer! Very cool. Maybe sometime you can attach a sound file?

    I like very much:

    (my body,
    the instrument;
    sound and air,
    its vehicles).

    Well penned.

  9. I think, as with most of our private and intense connections, words are hard to find...and yet I could feel the passion for the music and the voice in every line of your beautiful writing.

    to hold open

    the moment

    Between

    Beats,

  28. Audrey, a lovely meditation on singing, the actual work of the singer, to find those precious places where one's voice belongs. I did the same work for years and now still sing around the house - my Lex, too, sometimes in harmony, but there's something about having done is as your bread and butter that makes it a calling. I could completely relate to your imagery here. So glad to be back, even occasionally. Amy
