The Cloak

I sit cloaked in its scratchy wool
Reminding me of its presence
Every time I shift

A scree of failings
Tattered
Fill its edge like tricot
Tiny knots
Woven in patterns
Of perfect proportion
A sea of memories
Dyed a foam green
To match

I have taken this cloak and folded it
Into a pillow,
Nestled my head in its comfort
And dreamed the dreams of successes

Birthed in desire
And in each one
I find the cloak
On my lap
As I tie the knots
I have come to know so intimately
Blinded by time
I see only a tapestry of foam
In the sunlight

  1. The metaphor is striking, Audrey, and quite detailed. Reading the poem aloud, I feel both the comfort and irritation inherent to connections made and kept. I particularly like the "time-worn" reference in the last stanza, not diminishing value or appreciation, just altering it.

  2. As a sometimes 'crafty'person, I can relate to this in many ways! :) As Kim says, a wonderful metaphor for the prompt.

  3. mmm, The knots made and kept belong to the cloak that warms and pillows you-- and I believe your metaphor lives in my life. I can tell the knots like beads: some living and some dead, some let loose and some holding tight despite me, some soft and nearest the heart and all there, thank God, and part of my way in the world.

Of perfect proportion...some really fun play with words in there....it does make for a fine metaphor as well...i rather like the cloak as the pillow to rest your head on...

  6. This poem feels as warming as that tapestry, wrapped around one......I love when it is made into a pillow sent to nestle your dreams - and then when it changes to a tapestry of foam........perfection!

  7. At times a cloak for warmth, sometimes a pillow for comfort - you can almost touch the fabric of relationships through your words... love it!!!

  10. Wow! There was so much to this that I need to read it again later after I have had time to reflect. Believe me when I say I don't do that often, so well done my friend. Exceptional metaphor and images.

  13. Audrey,

I wish I was good at knits to under stand the depth behind this poem. But, the fact that it is relating to success makes me want to understand more :)

    Happy Valentine, Audrey

  14. The intricate "weavings" of this poem are striking, Audrey. The metaphorical cover at pillow, the dreams of success (which we all share, although my idea of success is simply getting the post up on the blog). This is a touching poem that speaks so well to the work of the poet. Thank you, Amy

  19. She uses her cloak, her covering, to create a pillow for resting and dreaming. She is resourceful.
