Dreams of Youth

Your dreams cascade in ripples
Of orange and yellow
(your favorite garden flowers have told me so)
And buoy the darkened images
Found dissonant in time’s map

And held within a ring of light
(golden perhaps)
You walk
Unfettered
Among the brisk rise and fall
Of petalled moments

While in your dreams
Your breath is sweeter
(the mint of toothpaste obliterated)

And the delights of tongue and lips
Held

A pleasure cupped
In this crone’s hands
A gift
As youth swings by us
For a moment

  4. A very brief moment. You capture the aging process with a filtered lens and make me grateful for my own crone's hands.

  5. This is beautifully expressed, Audrey. Yes, I love youth swinging by us for a moment. Sometimes we get a glimpse, don't we? (And then at other times I realize there is a lot I really would not want to relive.)

  9. I love this, how the narrator sees her favorite colors of youth by seeing what she nurtures in her garden. So youth seems a mere moment, but its relics remain--alive! no saints' bones here, but petals!--and bless the crone. Wow! I will hold this thought, new to me.

  17. I had a reflective moment about youth yesterday as I watched some boys playing baseball in the park. I loved youth, running free, wind in my hair, feeling like nothing in the world could stop me.

  19. Audrey, breathtaking phrase: "A pleasure cupped/in this crone's hands..."

I wish you had posted this at dverse, Ella's Edge, the "Wise/Wild Woman" prompt. It has more subtlety than most, yet the idea of the crone predominated there. Lovely, sad, and beautifully written. As always, that last. Amy
