To Cheat Death
The Morguefile
In my dreams
we cheat death
pulling toes backward
just in time
announcing lists
to empty air.
There are things to be said
though not the time to say them,
instead, they crowd my heart
take up small rooms.
We sort through them
and hope that is enough.

Two friends died unexpectedly this week. I am a bit lost in it right now.

i would much rather sort through them
ReplyDeletethan leave them boxed in that room...never shared

i am sorry for the loss of your friends
that is hard...hugs
"In my dreams / we cheat death" - this is a powerful opening and one that is made stronger by your explanation. I can understand your sense of bewilderment and loss, Audrey.
ReplyDeleteHard to lose one's friends, Audrey; especially two in one week. I have a friend battling serious cancer now....I think in our friends' mortality we see our own. I definitely do. Not easy. I am sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. I know what you feel. We all bear the words that were meant to be said and never were. Although they come back by night and day throughout your life, changed, with imagined answers, with hoped for responses, with love in their eyes in your dreams. Beautiful piece. The loss is palpable.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry, Audrey. Peace to you and their families. ~
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for the loss of your friends Audrey ~ Death makes us wish we said some things & if only we can unravel time ~
ReplyDeleteYou have expressed that emptiness and loss that you feel with such clarity. We who have suffered such loss relate and feel it too. My sincerest condolences on the loss of your dear friends, Audrey.

ReplyDeleteI cheated death once, eight years ago. I don't think I'll tempt fate again. Life for the moment and ride this bad boy as far as possible. :) I'm sorry for your losses.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your great loss, take care. It is very difficult when you lose someone. Wonder why such things happen.
